A Study of Approach to Intergrade the Dhamma Principles Appeared in Bang Fai Festival with Local Curriculum in the Educational Institutes under Udonthani Municipality

Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1) to study the dhamma appeared in Bang Fai festival of Isan people; 2) to study an approach to integrate Bang Fai festival with the local curriculum in the schools in the department of Social Studies, Religion and Culture, according to the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (2008), under Udonthani Municipality; 3) to study the learning achievement based on the above mentioned integration in the research area. The population of this research included 235 students, forth year secondary school, in Udonthani Municipality School 6 and 40 of those were selected as the samples by means of the random method. The research tools were a questionnaire and interview and the obtained data were interpreted by the following statistics: Mean ( ) and Standard Deviation (S.D). The data from the interview were analyzed by the descriptive analysis. 

The research results were as follows:

The dhammas appeared in Bang Fai festival of Isan people are: 1) gratitude; 2) harmony; 3) Bases of social solidarity (Pali: sangahavatthu-dhamma): generosity (dana), kindly speech (piyavaca), useful conduct (atthacariya) and equality consisting in impartiality (samanattata); 4) Path of accomplishment (iddhipada): aspiration (chanda), energy (viriya), thoughtfulness (citta), investigation (vimamsa); 5) meditation; 6) bases of meritorious action (puññakiriya-vatthu): giving, precepts and mindfulness; 7) volunteer spirit.

The approach to integrate Bang Fai festival with the local curriculum in the schools in the department of Social Studies, Religion and Culture according to the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (2008), under Udonthani Municipality can be made by taking Bang Fai festival as a learning unit in the learning area of social studies, religion and culture in the high school level and it is entitled ‘Bang Fai festival: Dhamma Principles as Appeared in the Festival’, criticized and evaluated by the appointed curriculum committee before being taught in the schools.

The learning achievement based on the above mentioned integration in the schools of the department of Social Studies, Religion and Culture according to the Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (2008), the mean pretest score of the students in the subject ‘Bang Fai festival: Dhamma Principles and Traditions’ was 9.45 and that of the post test was 14.15. This showed that the post test score was higher than that of the pretest with the statistical significance level of 0.01.
